Since 1979, the Wachsfabrik has been a significant venue for artistic practice. In 2018, the Kunstzentrum Wachsfabrik tenants’ and artists’ studio collective faced a challenging situation following an eviction notice, which also provided an opportunity for comprehensive strategic development.

DIE PR-BERATER developed a forward-looking strategy in close collaboration with the artists, aimed at stabilising the situation. Through the targeted involvement of stakeholders and supporters, as well as by building up their own capacity to act, the tenants’ collective succeeded in effectively representing their interests.

An increased public presence, active engagement with politicians and the wider community, and legal support ultimately led to a viable solution with the landlord and secured the future of the site. The Wachsfabrik Art Centre has been able to further expand its network within the wider community and is now a vibrant and visible part of Cologne’s independent cultural scene.
